What is the SERI STEER Unconference?
The SERI STEER Unconference is an annual virtual event hosted by the State Electronic Records Institute (SERI), a program of the Council of State Archivists focused on participant-driven discussions about electronic records management in state and territorial archives. “Unconference” refers to a meeting format that emphasizes attendee-led conversations and collaborative problem-solving rather than traditional presentations.
Purpose:
To bring together archivists, records managers, and other information professionals to share experiences, tools, strategies, and emerging practices for managing electronic records, addressing current challenges, and building community. Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Electronic records program development
- Policy and advocacy
- Emerging technologies
- Digital preservation & privacy
- Community challenges and peer solutions
How it Works:
This event typically features multiple discussion tracks and sessions driven by attendee questions and interests. The STEER Unconference Working Group helps guide conversation themes and facilitate discussions. Each year’s event also includes links to notes or recaps after the event.

Notes
To facilitate open discussion, the STEER Unconference is never recorded. Note takers are assigned to each session and compiled together to capture major topics, themes, and resources.
